Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for responding to site based spills
   • Access, interpret and apply spill response documentation, and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Coordinates activities with others and establishes communication systems to be used during spills
   • Identify and report possible spills risks and hazards to operations and environment
   • Determine the effective handling of general and hazardous waste
   • Identifies and communicates team responsibilities when managing a spill
   • Identifies reporting responsibilities when a spill occurs
2. Assess and identify spill type
   • Identify chemicals or products involved in the spill
   • Locate, read and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to identify required action to manage spill
   • Identify hazardous chemicals and the effects
   • Determine potential volume and size of spill
   • Determine potential risk to the environment
3. Conduct the spill response
   • Determine appropriate method of controlling the spill and the resources required
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to manage the spill
   • Control the spill relative to spill type and size
   • Contain spill relative to spill type and size
   • Seek assistance from others if unable to handle spill independently
   • Effectively clean up spill
   • Apply processes for managing and disposing of hazardous waste
4. Complete written documentation and reporting requirements
   • Notify required personnel of spill response
   • Complete written records and reports for spill response
   • Record and report use of spill response kits for replenishment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

obtains and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete responding to site based spills that meets all of the required outcomes including:

communicating the spill and likely impact to others

coordinates spill clean-up activity with others

demonstrates completion of the application of the site risk management system that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

determining spill type e.g. minor, medium or major

locating, interpreting and communicating safety data sheet requirements for spill product

implementing spill control measures using spill kits or available resources

controlling and containing the spill

implementing clean up and disposal of waste

preparing a written report on spill response activity and spill kit resource usage
